Frequently asked questions

Brief answers about required forms, assessments, privacy, and submission.

The Letter of Intent (LOI) is a short formal notice to your school district announcing that you will homeschool your child for the coming year. Under NY Part 100.10, it is due by July 1 each year. It does not need to include curriculum details, just your intent to homeschool.
The IHIP (Individualized Home Instruction Plan) is due August 15 and must cover every required subject for your child's grade. Each subject needs one paragraph describing the curriculum you'll use and your general teaching approach. It does not need to list daily lessons or detailed schedules, formal but brief is the standard.
Four quarterly reports are due each school year under NY Part 100.10(g): Q1 on November 15, Q2 on January 31, Q3 on April 15, and Q4 on June 30. Each report should describe what topics were covered per subject. If any subject had less than 80% of planned material covered, you must include an explanation.
It depends on grade and school year. Kindergarten has no assessment requirement. Grades 1 through 3 require a written narrative assessment every year. Grades 4 through 8 alternate between standardized testing in even school years and narrative assessment in odd school years. Grades 9 through 12 require a standardized test every year. The Compliance Checker calculates this automatically from the grade and school year you enter.
NYC families submit all documents centrally to the NYC DOE Office of Homeschooling. Letter of Intent submissions go to letterofintent@schools.nyc.gov, and other documents go to homeschool@schools.nyc.gov. Non-NYC families generally submit directly to their local district superintendent, and local contact information should always be verified before sending documents.
No. This is an independent free tool. It summarizes publicly available regulations from NY Part 100.10 to help families understand their obligations. It is not legal advice. Always verify current requirements directly with your school district or the New York State Education Department before submitting documents.
When you click “Generate with AI,” only curriculum names, subjects, and topics covered are sent to generate paragraph text. No names, addresses, or identifying information are included. The AI returns text using neutral phrasing like “the student,” and identifying details are handled locally in your browser.
